Alberta is known around the world for its energy resources and innovation. As early as 1975, the University of Alberta began to research and implement energy efficiency and conservation measures. With an annual utilities bill that tops $40 million, and growing concern over climate change, the university has entered a new era of accelerated innovation in energy management.


  1. The Energy Management Program has saved $353 million and about 2.5 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions since 1975.
  2. The university is seeking to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 17 per cent below 2005 levels by the year 2020. 
  3. Over four decades, water consumption has decreased 70 per cent per square metre; electrical consumption has been reduced 23 per cent; and steam consumption has decreased 45 per cent.
  4. Envision, the university’s energy management program, will invest $35 million over the next seven years, and will prevent 30,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year while saving the university approximately $4.5 million annually.
  5. The Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Augustana Campus operates Canada's largest building-integrated solar panel array.
  6. The university is measuring greenhouse gas emissions associated with our energy consumption.
  7. The District Energy System, the 5th largest campus system North America, efficiently heats and cools the entire campus using co-generation and natural gas fuel.
  8. The Cooling Plant on Campus produces and stores chilled water in a thermal energy storage system during off-peak hours when power prices are lower.
  9. Approximately 780 kw of renewable and alternative energy capacity is planned to be installed by 2020.

Did You Know?

In the Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Science, reflective panels near the ceiling pass sunlight down throughout the building. This significantly decreases the need for artificial lighting powered by electricity.

Even when sunlight is unavailable, floodlights use the reflective panels to maximize the efficiency of artificial lighting.
