Social Sustainability

Social sustainability involves the many ways the University of Alberta interacts with and supports the health and well-being of our students, staff, faculty and visitors to campus. It involves initiatives that grow the social good – moving our campus away from inequity, conflict and cultural tensions towards constructive relationships, safety and social inclusion.

The University of Alberta fosters social sustainability in many ways linked to:

Health & Wellness. We encourage students, faculty and staff to nurture a healthy body and mind. We offer many opportunities for people to take care of themselves and get involved sport and physical activity, and to nurture mental health.

Building Community. We acknowledge the Traditional Territory and Indigenous peoples whose footsteps have marked this territory for centuries including the Cree, Saulteaux, Blackfoot, Métis, and Nakota Sioux. We host encourage programs that encourage inclusion of diverse individuals and build connections between people and the campus community.

Career & Life Development. We foster a learning community, enabling everyone to work towards their personal best and raise our learning for a sustainability future.

Institutional Governance

The university governs itself with a bi-cameral governance structure. The Board of Governors has authority for business governance and the General Faculties Council has authority for academic governance. The are many ways for staff, faculty and students to get involved in governance.
