Funding & Competitions
The Office of Sustainability funds sustainable change. Our granting programs are here to help UAlberta students, staff and faculty get their ideas off the ground—incredible, ambitious, simple, feasible, transformative projects for building a sustainable campus.
There are two funds to choose from. Green Grants supports smaller projects at any time of the year, including engagement events. The Sustainability Enhancement Fund provides significant funding to enable collaborative projects with deep and tangible benefit.
Up to $2,000 per project
Green Grants are provided to stimulate projects with measurable benefits and results at the university. Eligible projects could include demonstration sites, educational events, office green teams, bicycle clinics, skill-building activities, behaviour change programs, contests and challenges. Creativity is encouraged. Projects should incorporate bias-balanced approaches, collaboration and should lead to positive change.
Funding for Green Grants comes in part from refundable beverage containers collected on North Campus. The Alberta Emerald Foundation is also contributing up to $400 per successful application to support projects led by youth (aged 25 or under) that focus on environmental work.
From $2,000 to $50,000.
The Sustainability Enhancement Fund (SEF) supports collaborative projects that improve the university's operational performance, foster campus engagement and/or demonstrate the viability of best practices and technologies. Proposals that develop collaborations between students, faculty and staff are preferred. Proposals that match funds from other sources or demonstrate that they will become self-sufficient over time may receive priority.
Funding for the SEF is made possible by the university’s energy management program, Envision. Savings generated by energy efficiency and renewable energy are re-invested into the university community through the SEF.

Additional Funding Sources
Funding is a key challenge facing many students who want to get involved in co-curricular and experiential learning activities. Career and Placement Services Office (CAPS) maintains a list funding programs and awards offered to UAlberta undergraduate and graduate students.
