The Green Spaces Certification Program helps research and teaching labs adopt sustainable practices and earn recognition for their efforts.
Any research, field or teaching lab at the University of Alberta can be Green Spaces certified by demonstrating best practices for environmental health and safety. A green lab is a safe lab. Everyone working in the lab commits to reducing waste, conserving energy and water and maintaining a safe space.
What are some actions you can take? Anything from recycling, turning off unused equipment or finding alternatives to hazardous chemicals. These ideas and others are highlighted in the application.
How do I get started?
- Learn what sustainable actions you can adopt—and might already be practising—by browsing the application.
- Take action by completing and submitting the application. Detailed instructions are on the form.
- Earn recognition for your efforts. The Office of Sustainability will verify your application and award you Green Spaces Bronze, Silver or Gold certification.
You may be surprised to find that you are only a few actions away from achieving certification. Receiving the framed certificate can be a great jumping off point for engaging your co-workers and students in conversations about sustainability and achieving higher certification the next time.
The Green Labs program was made possible in part by the generous support of Fisher Scientific.
Making a difference
Labs can use considerable amounts of water, electricity and consumable products. By taking the initiative to be a Green Lab you take on small actions that culminate in big benefits the environment and society. You will also be actively supporting the university’s Sustainability Commitment. Cultivate a culture of sustainability and maintain a safe workspace for all.
Start today! Take it to the next level with Green Spaces.
For background information and rationale about the actions on the Labs Checklist, please read the Green Labs Companion.
How will I be recognized?
Your lab will receive a certificate wall cling that recognizes your Bronze, Silver or Gold ranking.
The Office of Sustainability will help publicize your achievement on social media and exceptional efforts may be featured in campus publications like Faces of Sustainability.
The first lab to be certified was the team at the Core Biology Teaching Lab. Read about their experience and browse the full listing of certified spaces.
